MBFF Brisbane: Emerging Design Talent

There is nothing like a fashion festival to get me in the mood to spend money on clothes. Not that I need a reason!  The Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane was a great way to be inspired (photo above from www.mbff.com.au).

Armed with my precious iPhone for photos and notes, and a glass of champagne to toast the designs, I took my place in the newly refurbished City Hall and waited with anticipation for the fashion I was about to experience.

MBFF Brisbane Bridal
Bridal show

The first show of the evening was The Monili Jewellers Bridal Group Show which was nothing short of stunning and made my yearn for another wedding despite already being married! The designers included Brides Desire by Wendy Sullivan, George Wu, Regalia Bridal Designs, Bertossi Brides, Darb Bridal Couture, Paul Hunt, Jack Sullivan Bridal, and Elizabeth de Varga Exclusive Fashions.

The Bridal designs were anything but traditional and ranged from 1920s to modern vintage with a twist with the headpiece of choice being a simple headband or hat.

The most anticipated show of the evening was the sold out Emerging Designer Group Show showcasing new talent in Brisbane.  Let me share some insights on my favourites from the show.

MBFF Brisbane Sinead
Sinead James

Sinead James

Sinead James is one of those people who always knew she was going to be a fashion designer from a young age. She started her eponymous label in 2011 after completing her business degree and Applied Fashion Design Certificate.

Creating garments for the fashion forward chic woman, Sinead’s designs are effortless sophistication with a modern edge.  All garments are 100% Australian owned and handmade using only the highest quality fabrics and materials. With a great love and respect for all living things that walk the earth, Sinead is very conscious to research all sourced material to ensure that no animals were harmed during production, a fact which I love and wish more designers did.

MBFF Brisbane Stokes
Stokes Thompson Designs

Stokes Thompson Designs

Stokes Thompson Designs is all about making exclusive fashion accessible to women who want to look and feel a little more special at important occasions. They do this by making only one in each size for many of their designs so you are guaranteed an original and exclusive design.

The Creative Director, Vicki Thompson is inspired by Australian landscapes – the mauves of an outback sunset, the ochre horizons and the blue/green oceans of Australia. This came to life in the designs that were showcased on the runway. More at www.stokesthompson.com.au.

MBFF Brisbane Begitta
Begitta

Begitta

One of the more glamorous designers on display was Begitta with her dramatic silhouettes and whimsical flowing designs. Obviously a very skilled couturier, the made to measure bespoke pieces combine current trends and are infused with whimsical delight. Her designs combine romance and enchantment with a touch of fairytale – feminine, fun and flirty! More at www.begitta.com.

MBFF Brisbane Peony

Peony Swimwear

Growing up, the founder of Peony Swimwear Becky Jacks, always knew it was summer when her Nan’s peonies began to bloom. Her swimwear designs are handmade in Australia using the most luxurious italian lycra. Each collection is built upon one-off signature prints, dreamy colour palettes and fluid silhouettes.

Never fussy or overdone, peony is inspired by the quintessential Australian girl who spends her days with sandy feet and salty hair. Being a beach girl, I loved the simple designs that are perfect for this Aussie summer.
